When applying roofing tar make sure that you have at least a few consecutive days of sunshine without rain or snow so that the tar has time to cure. Temperatures lower than 70f means the substance will take a long time to set. While you can apply roofing tar at lower temperatures it will not properly set until it reaches 70 degrees. You ll need one that can go over 500 degrees fahrenheit.

When to tar a roof. The warm temperature can cause the tar to drip and make an incredible sticky mess. Tar can flash into sudden flame if it s too hot it s basically chunky oil which does burn. The ideal temperature is 70 degrees f.

At hotter temperatures your roofing tar may start dripping creating an unsightly difficult mess. You don t want your tar to reach that number though you want it to remain at around 450 475 degrees. Roofing tar is sensitive to temperature. However it won t properly dry and seal until the temperature is at least 70 degrees.

However in extremely high temperatures roofing tar will turn into a liquid. Additionally never apply tar when it is extremely hot say in the middle of summer. Yes tar can be applied to a roof in temperatures as low as 40 degrees fahrenheit. If the roofing job needs to be done immediately due to leaks or wind damage lay a tarp over the damaged section of the roof or install temporary roofing.
