It can ofter sound as if the roof is broken in some way or the roof is going to collapse. The sound can be present both in mild weather and heavy winds. The sun shines on your roof all day warming the tiles and sub roof. The creaking sound is perfectly normal and is caused by the movement of roof timbers responding to changes in temperature.

Or when it has come loose. Roof noises may be described as those attributed to an obvious source. As your house quiets down at night and the temperatures fall the cooling of your roof components can often be heard. The most common noise issues with flat roofs are banging loud rain snapping popping sounds heat related cracking and creaking.

Banging sounds generally occur when a part of the roof has not been properly fixed in place. At night the outdoor temperature lowers and the wood contracts. This movement creates the popping noise. As the lumber expands it moves and it will rub against other pieces of wood that aren t moving at the same rate.

During the day the wood expands. The wood frame under your roof experiences temperature changes from the outdoor air because the attic does not receive much heating or air conditioning. Popping cracking and snapping sounds coming from their roofs especially when the colder weather hits is a common problem.
